We understand that the dental office can be a bit scary at times, especially when you’re coming in for oral surgery or for major dental treatment, but sedation dentistry is here to save the day and help you feel more comfortable in the dental chair!
Sedation dentistry comes in all shapes, sizes, and forms, but the two most common sedatives include:
• Oral Sedation: Oral sedation comes in the form of a pill, and you will likely take the pill about an hour prior to your appointment. This pill provides affects similar to Valium, and it will make you feel relaxed and calm in the dental chair. Depending on the dose given, you might even fall asleep while you receive your treatment. If you do fall asleep, your dentist will wake you with a gentle shake.
• Nitrous Oxide Sedation: Nitrous oxide sedation is a light, flavored, and gas-like sedative that is inhaled through the nose. When you come in for your appointment, your dentist will place a small mask over your nose and will ask you to deeply inhale for a few minutes. As the time passes by, you will begin to feel tingly and light headed. You will stay awake during your treatment, but you will remain calm and relaxed. Once your treatment is over, your dentist will remove the mask and the sedative will wear off quickly.
